Intent to Home School

In Tennessee, families have several educational paths for K-12 students, including home education. Under Tennessee state law (Tenn. Code Ann. § 49-6-3050(a)(1)), a home school is defined as a:

"School conducted or directed by a parent or parents or a legal guardian or guardians for their own children."

Paths to Educating Your Child at Home

Parents and legal guardians generally have three options when managing their child's education from home:

1. Independent Home School

   Directly registered with the local school district.

2. Church-Related Non-Public School

   Enrollment through an approved church-related school, as defined by Tenn. Code Ann. § 49-50-801.

3. Approved Accredited Online School

   Note: While this option allows students to attend school from home, it does not technically meet the legal definition of a "home school" under Tennessee state law.

How to Register for Independent Homeschooling

If you choose to register as an Independent Home School, please follow these steps:

1. Download the Form: Complete the official Intent to Home School Form.

2. Provide Documentation: Include proof of the parent/guardian's high school diploma, transcript, or GED.

3. Submit Your Application: Deliver or mail your completed form and proof of education to:
